SF’s 2024 Macy’s Union Square Great Christmas Tree (Nov. 14 – Jan. 1)

This iconic landmark, Macy’s Great Tree in Union Square, will return decorated in ornaments and lighting up Union Square throughout the holidays.

2024 update – the official lighting quietly took place on wednesday, November 13 even though the official Macy’s website listed the lighting as beginning on November 14, but the Union Square website listed it as November 15th.

San Francisco’s most recognized Christmas tree typically stands more than 83-feet tall, decorated with 43,000 twinkling energy-efficient LED lights and 700 shining ornaments.

Although the tree will make another appearance in Union Square and will be lit throughout the holidays, there isn’t a tree lighting ceremony in 2024. Sadly, there was not a tree lighting ceremony in 2022 nor 2023.

The tree is typically lit at 6 pm, but we don’t have the official time the lights will be switched on on November 14, 2024. We have reached out to Macy’s to find out more info and we’ll update the post if/when we hear back. Please note, this post has been updated to reflect that the tree will lit Thursday, November 14, not November 15 as previously listed.
